Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association Passport Day

Passport

When a person said, “We’re going to the Wine Country,” Napa immediately came to mind, but that is so 10 years ago. There’s no need to pack up the car and head an hour and a half north anymore when the Wine Country is already here in Los Gatos’ backyard. On November 19th, the Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association (SCMWA) will see to connoisseurs’ desires for award-winning, boutique-style wines produced in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains with its Passport Day.

Over 50 local wineries (including those not usually open to the public) will swing their doors wide open from 11am to 5pm for wine lovers to sip and savor varietals that are waiting to please all palates. The event works like this: a $40 donation procures an actual passport to waive any and all tasting fees on Passport Day. Passports are stamped when visiting the participating wineries and the object is to completely fill the passport and earn a prize.

One could argue, though, that the real prize is visiting the wineries and discovering new wines to pair with dinner or sip by the fire. Given the number of wineries nestled within the Santa Cruz Mountains, a favorite (or, most likely, favorites) won’t be too difficult to find. SCMWA also encourages holders of passports to take their time getting theirs stamped, because Passport Day should be regarded as a marathon, not a sprint. Along with the November 19th Passport Day, there will be others on the third Saturday of January, April and July.

In addition to the free tasting with a passport in hand, patrons also have the opportunity to take advantage of a 10% discount and waived corkage fees for the nearly dozen restaurants participating in the event.

For those who are looking for fine wines, food and an overall great time, get a passport for a glimpse of what makes Los Gatos an esteemed citizen in California Wine Country’s expanding population.
